Can we keep the same quality of life without oil?

I'm always hearing about how doomed we are when we run out of oil. Is this true? Or are there enough replacing technologies to maintain our quality of life? Do we have adequate recycling technology to reuse 100% of plastics that we currently use? Will we even need it?Can we keep the same quality of life without oil?
No sweat here. At least not in your life time. If we kept using oil at our current rate we wouldn't run into a problem for another 500 years.

At this point in time our whole society is built on oil. Not just america but the world. There are several new theories as to the formation of oil, one is that it is created in the subduction zones of the world. As the crust of the earth is forced under and back into the mantel the pressure and heat free up the organic material and create more oil. this would explain why a lot of the worlds oil is found in subduction zones. And no we need to find a replacement that is just as cheap as oil to maintain our current quality.
Can we keep the same quality of life without oil? No, because oil in cheap. All replacements will cost far more. Therefore the cost of living will be much higher without oil. With Hybrid technology we can get far Better gas mileage so oil can last longer. Also it is possible to make oil from coal, but it costs allot.

The short answer to your question is: We can't!
Well if the oil ran dry we would still be able to make things that are commonly made of oil besides lubricants by recycling for many many years after. Nuclear energy would produce electricity for our electric cars made out of recycled fossil fueled cars. Yes there would be some big problems but we would do OK.
If we leave everything the way it is now, running out of oil is going to be quite painful. If we rebuild our nation now in a way that will still work without oil, we can have a very good lifestyle without it.
Dont worry Pres obama is doing all he can to cut down the use of oil.
